Family support in Los Angeles

The Blackburn Group helps Los Angeles families who love someone struggling with addiction, mental health or both. We offer family coaching, a free virtual family support group every two weeks and case management, whether or not your loved one is in treatment. Call (888) 305-5422 to talk with someone who understands.

Addiction affects the whole family. Parents lose sleep. Partners carry more than their share. Brothers and sisters get pushed to the side. Many families spend years reacting to one crisis after another without ever getting support of their own. You do not have to wait for your loved one to change before you get help.

The Blackburn Group is one Los Angeles organization with several areas of service. Family support brings together Blackburn Recovery Services, which runs the free family support group and offers case management and intervention, and Blackburn Clinical Services, which offers family coaching.

What happens when you call

The first call is about you and your family. Your loved one does not need to agree to anything.

Here is what usually happens when you call (888) 305-5422:

  • A real person answers or calls you back, and listens first. You do not need the right words or a diagnosis.
  • We ask a few simple questions to help sort out what is going on. We want to know who needs support, what has changed, what has already been tried, and what feels most urgent.
  • We point you to the right team inside The Blackburn Group, or to an outside resource if that fits better.
  • Nothing is shared with anyone without consent. If the person you are worried about is an adult, we talk about what they have agreed to share.

For family support, we will ask what is happening at home, what has been tried and what feels hardest right now. We can tell you how to join the free family support group, talk about family coaching and help you decide whether more is needed, like case management or an intervention.

Who we help

Any family member or close friend who is worried about someone they love.

  • Parents of a teen or young adult who is drinking or using.
  • Spouses and partners living with someone else’s addiction.
  • Adult children worried about a parent.
  • Brothers, sisters and close friends who feel stuck in the middle.
  • Families whose loved one is in treatment, just finished treatment or is not ready for help yet.

Our guide on support for families of someone in recovery is a good place to start.

The free family support group

A free virtual family support group meets every two weeks and is open to any family.

Blackburn Recovery Services runs the group. It is a place to learn about addiction and recovery, ask questions, hear from other families and feel less alone. You do not need to be a client, and your loved one does not need to be in treatment. Call us to find out how to join.

How we work

Every family is different. These are the main kinds of support we offer.

  • Family coaching. One-on-one work with parents, partners or other family members through Blackburn Clinical Services. Coaching helps you set clear limits, stop patterns that keep things stuck and talk with your loved one in ways that are more likely to help.
  • Case management. One steady person who helps organize care and keeps the family informed with consent. See case management in Los Angeles.
  • Intervention. When a loved one will not accept help, a planned, caring family intervention may be the next step.
  • Monitoring. Random drug and alcohol testing, with results shared only with consent, can help rebuild trust. See monitoring.

If your loved one is in danger, read what to do when a loved one is in crisis and what families should know about fentanyl and naloxone.
