Help for a young adult in Los Angeles

The Blackburn Group helps Los Angeles parents whose young adult son or daughter seems stuck, is drinking or using, or is struggling to launch into school, work and independence. We offer one-on-one mentoring, case management and clinical care, plus real support for parents. Call (888) 305-5422 to talk about what is happening at home.

Some young adults stall out quietly. They stop going to class, sleep through the day, lose a job or spend most of their time gaming or alone. Others are drinking, using or dealing with anxiety and depression that no one has named yet. Parents often feel caught between pushing too hard and doing too much. Neither feels right.

The Blackburn Group is one Los Angeles organization with several areas of service. For a young adult, that often means mentoring for direction and follow-through, case management to keep things organized, and clinical care when mental health or substance use is part of the picture. We help you figure out which pieces fit.

What happens when you call

The first call is for you, the parent. You do not need your son or daughter on the line.

Here is what usually happens when you call (888) 305-5422:

  • A real person answers or calls you back, and listens first. You do not need the right words or a diagnosis.
  • We ask a few simple questions to help sort out what is going on. We want to know who needs support, what has changed, what has already been tried, and what feels most urgent.
  • We point you to the right team inside The Blackburn Group, or to an outside resource if that fits better.
  • Nothing is shared with anyone without consent. If the person you are worried about is an adult, we talk about what they have agreed to share.

For young adults, we will ask what a normal day looks like now and what has changed. We will also ask whether drinking, drug use or mental health is part of it, and how open your son or daughter is to help. Because they are an adult, we talk about how to invite them in, not force them.

Who we help

We work with young adults and their parents across Los Angeles.

  • Young adults living at home who are not working or in school and seem to have lost direction. Some people call this failure to launch.
  • College students who are struggling, have stepped away or came home and have not gone back.
  • Young adults whose drinking, cannabis or other drug use is getting in the way.
  • Young adults with anxiety, depression, ADHD or other mental health concerns that make everyday life hard.
  • Young adults coming home after treatment who need structure and someone in their corner.

Our guides on helping a young adult who feels stuck and helping a college student who is struggling are good places to start.

How we work

The plan depends on what is really going on. These are the main pieces we use.

  • One-on-one mentoring. A dedicated mentor meets with your son or daughter by video or in person in Los Angeles, helps set goals and builds the habits that make them stick. Learn more about mentoring.
  • Case management. One steady person who helps organize appointments, care and next steps, and keeps parents updated with consent. See case management in Los Angeles.
  • Clinical care. Individual therapy, psychiatry and medication management, ADHD evaluation and testing through Blackburn Clinical Services.
  • Monitoring. When substance use is part of the picture, random drug and alcohol testing with results shared with consent can add structure and trust. See monitoring.

Not sure which is which? Our guide on case management, mentoring or therapy explains the difference.

Support for parents

Parents need a plan of their own, too.

Family coaching through Blackburn Clinical Services can help you decide what support to offer, what limits to set and how to talk with your son or daughter without starting a fight. Blackburn Recovery Services also runs a free virtual family support group every two weeks, open to any family.

Questions

My son or daughter is an adult. Can I still get help?

Yes. You can call us yourself to talk about what is happening and what your options are. Because your child is an adult, we help you invite them into support. We only share their information with their consent.

Is this only for young adults who use drugs or alcohol?

No. Many young adults we work with are stuck because of anxiety, depression, ADHD or simply losing direction. Substance use may or may not be part of it.

What does a mentor actually do?

A mentor meets one-on-one with your son or daughter, helps them set goals and builds routines around school, work, health and daily life. Mentoring does not replace therapy, and mentors coordinate with clinicians with permission.

What if my young adult refuses help?

That is common. Family coaching and the free family support group can help you decide what to do in the meantime, and many young adults become more open once their parents change their approach.

How do we get started?

Call (888) 305-5422. A real person will listen, ask some simple questions and help you choose a first step that fits your family.
