Outpatient detox in Los Angeles

The Blackburn Group offers outpatient detox at home in Los Angeles through Blackburn Clinical Services, for people who can safely detox outside a hospital or residential setting. Stopping alcohol or benzodiazepines suddenly can be medically dangerous, so talk to a doctor before you stop. Call (888) 305-5422 and we will help you think through the safest first step.

Many people want to stop drinking or using but cannot step away from work, family or school for weeks. For the right person, outpatient detox lets them go through withdrawal at home with medical guidance and a plan. For others, a higher level of care is safer. Part of our job is helping you tell the difference.

Outpatient detox is part of Blackburn Clinical Services, the clinical area of service within The Blackburn Group. Detox is only the first step, and the same organization can help with what comes after, including therapy, psychiatry and medication management, case management and monitoring.

Safety first

Withdrawal is a medical event. Please read this before you cut back or stop.

  • Alcohol and benzodiazepines. Stopping suddenly after regular, heavy or long-term use can cause serious withdrawal, including seizures. It can be life threatening. Do not stop on your own. Talk to a doctor first.
  • Opioids, including fentanyl. Withdrawal is very hard, and the risk of overdose goes up after a break because tolerance drops. Keep naloxone nearby.
  • Not everyone is a fit for home detox. A history of seizures or severe withdrawal, other serious health problems, mixing several substances, or no safe and steady person at home can all mean a higher level of care is the safer choice.

Our guide on fentanyl and naloxone explains how to keep someone safer. If someone is in crisis, call or text 988. In an emergency, call 911.

What happens when you call

We start by listening, and safety questions come early.

Here is what usually happens when you call (888) 305-5422:

  • A real person answers or calls you back, and listens first. You do not need the right words or a diagnosis.
  • We ask a few simple questions to help sort out what is going on. We want to know who needs support, what has changed, what has already been tried, and what feels most urgent.
  • We point you to the right team inside The Blackburn Group, or to an outside resource if that fits better.
  • Nothing is shared with anyone without consent. If the person you are worried about is an adult, we talk about what they have agreed to share.

For detox questions, we will ask what substances are involved, how much and how often, past withdrawal, health conditions and who is at home. That helps us understand whether outpatient detox may be an option to explore with a clinician, or whether another setting would be safer. If it is not a fit, we will say so and help you find what is.

Who we help

Outpatient detox may be worth exploring for adults in Los Angeles who are medically stable and ready to stop.

  • Adults who want to stop drinking or using and have a safe, supportive home.
  • Professionals who need a private, medically guided plan that fits around their responsibilities.
  • People who have been to treatment before and need help getting back on track.
  • Families who want to understand the options before their loved one tries to quit on their own.

How we work

Every detox plan is built around one person, after a medical assessment.

In general terms, outpatient detox involves:

  • An assessment. A clinician reviews substance use, health history and safety to decide whether home detox is appropriate.
  • A written plan. Everyone knows what to expect, who to contact and when to seek urgent care.
  • Close check-ins. The care team stays in touch during withdrawal and adjusts the plan as needed.
  • A plan for after. Before detox ends, the next steps are already lined up.

Any medicine decisions are made by the treating clinician. Learn more about our clinical services.

After detox

Detox clears the body. Recovery is what comes next.

The weeks after detox matter a great deal. Therapy, psychiatry and medication management, case management, drug and alcohol monitoring and one-on-one mentoring can all help. Our guide to the first 90 days after treatment explains what that stretch often looks like.

Questions

Is it safe to detox at home?

For some people, with medical guidance, yes. For others, it is not. Stopping alcohol or benzodiazepines suddenly can be dangerous, and some health histories call for a higher level of care. A clinician decides after an assessment.

Can I just stop drinking on my own?

Please talk to a doctor first. After regular or heavy drinking, stopping suddenly can cause serious withdrawal, including seizures. The same is true for benzodiazepines. Call (888) 305-5422 or your own doctor before you stop.

Who should not detox at home?

People with a history of seizures or severe withdrawal, serious medical or mental health conditions, use of several substances at once, or no safe person at home may need a different setting. We help you find the right fit.

What happens after detox?

Detox is the first step. Afterward, therapy, psychiatry and medication management, case management, monitoring and mentoring can help keep things moving. We start planning for this before detox ends.

How do I get started?

Call (888) 305-5422. A real person will listen, ask some safety questions and help you understand whether outpatient detox may be an option.
